(A writing to Dewey Gillespie from a very respected friend AJH) Nymph fishing is acknowledged to be the most difficult phase of the fly rod art. Yet, with some degree of casting skill and careful attention to details, it quickly becomes a reliable method of catching fish on artificials. Nymph fishing originated in England at a much later date than either the wet or dry fly, and when properly understood, it offers many opportunities, which the older methods cannot meet. Natural nymphs are abundant at all seasons of the year, and regardless of weather conditions one can usually take enough fish to make the day successful. The artificial nymphs vary in hook size from No. 4 down to No. 14. |
